The Big Picture — read this first

Two plays, one story, two opposite worlds

Both works tell the SAME family story: a king comes home from war, his wife kills him, their son comes back and kills his mother. Then the son is punished by the Furies.

The Oresteia by Aeschylus (Greek, 458 BC) is three plays: Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, The Eumenides.

The Flies by Sartre (French, 1943) is one play that re-tells the same story with a completely different meaning.

The one rule that answers most questions

Remember this line THE ORESTEIA = FATE. THE FLIES = FREEDOM.

Every comparison question is a version of this:
• gods control men  ↔  gods are fake
• verse (poetry)  ↔  prose (normal talk)
• there is a Chorus  ↔  no Chorus
• kind to women  ↔  unkind to women
• ends in peace  ↔  ends in departure

When you guess, choose the answer where the old play is controlled and the new play is free.

Sartre's method in one word: DEMOTION

Sartre takes everything noble in Aeschylus and makes it small and ugly. If you understand this, you can answer any comparison question:
In AeschylusIn Sartre
Zeus = father of the godsZeus = god of flies and death
Pylades = the voice of Apollo, speaks onceThe Tutor = a talkative man who believes nothing
Clytemnestra = strong, intelligent queenA painted, ugly woman with dead eyes
Electra = mourning princessA servant who washes the royal underwear
Libation = wine, honey and milk at the tombA bin of kitchen rubbish at the statue
Recognition by a lock of hair → joyProof by rough hands → she rejects him

The curse in 5 steps

1
Thyestes sleeps with the wife of his brother Atreus.
2
Atreus drives him out of Argos.
3
Thyestes comes back and asks forgiveness. Atreus pretends to forgive.
4
Atreus kills Thyestes' children, cooks them, and feeds them to their father at a banquet.
5
Thyestes curses Atreus and all his family. Only one son survives: Aegisthus — who will come back for revenge.
1
⚠ Exam trapThe curse began with the cannibal banquet — NOT with the sacrifice of Iphigenia. Iphigenia is a result of the curse, not its beginning.

The background story (before the play starts)

1
Paris, a prince of Troy, is a guest of Menelaus, king of Sparta. He runs away with Menelaus' wife Helen.
2
This breaks xenia (the sacred law of hospitality, protected by Zeus). So the war is a religious crime, not just a personal insult.
3
Agamemnon (Menelaus' brother) leads the Greek army to Troy. But the goddess Artemis stops the wind.
4
To get the wind back, Agamemnon sacrifices his own daughter Iphigenia.
5
His wife Clytemnestra never forgives him. She waits ten years and takes Aegisthus as her lover.
1
Exam tips — Lecture 17 plays survived out of ~90 — the most repeated fact in the course.
• The turtle/vulture death is asked every term.
• Aeschylus added the SECOND actor (Sophocles added the third — that is the trap).
• Sartre is father of FRENCH existentialism. Missing the word "French" makes the sentence false.
1943 = both Being and Nothingness AND The Flies.
1943 = الوجود والعدم والذباب معاً.

Lectures 2 & 3 — Agamemnon begins

What happens, in order

1
A Watchman stands on the palace roof. He has been awake one whole year, waiting for a fire-signal (beacon) to say Troy has fallen.
2
He sees the beacon and is happy — but he is also afraid. He says about the queen: "That woman — she manoeuvres like a man."
3
The Chorus (old men of Argos) enter and remember the story of the war, and the sacrifice of Iphigenia.
4
They describe Agamemnon's impossible choice: sail and kill your daughter, or refuse and dishonour Zeus. He chose ambition.
5
Clytemnestra announces that Troy fell last night. A Herald arrives and confirms it — and says Menelaus is lost at sea.
1
Names to rememberWatchman = 1 year awake, the beacon. • Chorus in Agamemnon = old men of Argos. • Herald = brings the news in person.

Lecture 4 — Agamemnon: the murder

What happens, in order

1
Agamemnon arrives with Cassandra, a Trojan princess he has taken as a slave and concubine.
2
THE RED CARPET. Clytemnestra spreads purple cloth on the ground. Purple cloth is only for gods. He knows it is wrong: "Give me the tributes of a man and not a god." But she flatters him and he walks on it. This is hubris (dangerous pride) — and it seals his death.
3
Cassandra speaks. Apollo loved her and gave her the gift of prophecy. She refused to have his child, so he punished her: she always tells the truth, and nobody ever believes her.
4
She sees everything: "She is the lioness… she beds with the wolf" (lioness = Clytemnestra, wolf = Aegisthus), "the knife waits for me", and she predicts Orestes will come to avenge.
5
THE MURDER. Clytemnestra traps Agamemnon in a net/robe in the bath and strikes him three times. "My heart is steel." She kills Cassandra too.
6
Aegisthus appears and says the murder is justice for what Atreus did to his father. The Chorus calls him a coward: "Why did the woman have to bring him down?"
1
⚠ Very important comparisonIn The Oresteia, CLYTEMNESTRA kills Agamemnon, alone, with a blade in the bath, 3 blows.
In The Flies, AEGISTHEUS kills him, with an AXE.
The exam swaps the killer and the weapon. This is the single most examinable difference of fact.

Lecture 5 — The Libation Bearers

What happens, in order

1
Orestes comes back secretly to Argos with his friend Pylades. Apollo's oracle ordered him to avenge his father.
2
He leaves a lock of his hair on his father's tomb.
3
Electra comes to the tomb carrying libations (offerings). Her mother sent her, because Clytemnestra had a terrible dream.
4
THE DREAM: Clytemnestra dreamed she gave birth to a snake, and the snake bit her breast. The snake is Orestes — the son she fed will draw her blood. Irony: she sends gifts to calm the dead, and she is really feeding her own killer.
5
Electra finds the hair, and brother and sister recognise each other — a joyful scene.
6
Orestes gets into the palace by telling a lie: he says Orestes is dead. The nurse Cilissa changes the message so Aegisthus comes without his bodyguards.
7
Orestes kills Aegisthus. Then he hesitates in front of his mother: "What will I do, Pylades? — I dread to kill my mother!"
8
PYLADES SPEAKS — his ONLY speech in the whole play. He reminds Orestes of Apollo. Orestes kills his mother.
9
The Furies appear and drive Orestes mad. He runs away.
1
Exam tips — Lecture 5Chorus here = slave women of the palace (NOT old men — that is Agamemnon).
Pylades speaks only ONCE, and it is the moment that decides everything.
• The snake dream and the lock of hair are asked in every paper.
Cilissa = the nurse who disarms Aegisthus by changing the message.

Lecture 6 — The Eumenides: the trial

What happens, in order

1
At DELPHI: Orestes takes refuge in Apollo's temple. Apollo has put the Furies to sleep.
2
Clytemnestra's GHOST appears and wakes the Furies: "Hunt him!"
3
At ATHENS: Orestes begs Athena for help. She says: "Two sides are here, and only half is heard." So she creates the FIRST COURT in history for murder, with 10 citizens as jury.
4
APOLLO defends Orestes with a strange argument: "The mother is not the parent, just a nurse to the seed." Meaning: only the father is the real parent, so killing a mother is not killing your blood. His proof: Athena was born from Zeus' head, with no mother at all.
5
The FURIES answer: "The blood of the man she killed was not her own." Meaning: Clytemnestra killed a husband (not blood family), but Orestes killed his mother (blood family). So his crime is worse.
6
THE VOTE IS TIED. Athena gives the last vote: "The lots are equal. The man goes free." She explains: "I honour the male, in all things but marriage."
7
The Furies are furious. Athena does not fight them — she offers them honour and a home in Athens. They accept and become the EUMENIDES = "the Kindly Ones".
8
Revenge ends. Justice begins. The trilogy finishes in reconciliation.
1
Simple way to remember the roles APOLLO defends. ATHENA judges and votes. THE FURIES accuse.
Three settings: Delphi → Athens → the court (Areopagus). This is why The Eumenides has no unity of place, while the first two plays do.

Lecture 7 — The Flies, Act One

What happens, in order

1
Fifteen years after the murder. Orestes comes back to Argos, but nobody knows him. He uses a false name: PHILEBUS from CORINTH. With him is the Tutor (not Pylades).
2
The city is horrible: black clothes, closed doors and windows, and FLIES everywhere. In the square there is a statue of "Zeus, god of flies and death".
3
A stranger called DEMETRIOS from ATHENS tells them the history of the city. He is really ZEUS in disguise.
4
What are the flies? They are REMORSE and GUILT — and later we learn they are also the Furies.
5
Orestes at this point is empty: "I'm free as air… gloriously aloof." He has no city, no memories, no ties. This freedom is useless — it is emptiness, not real freedom.
6
Electra appears. She curses the statue of Zeus and throws rubbish at it — instead of the beautiful libations of the old play.
1
⚠ The four names you must not swap ORESTES = PHILEBUS, from CORINTH.
ZEUS = DEMETRIOS, from ATHENS.
The exam swaps the names AND the cities. Learn them as two pairs.

Lecture 8 — Electra, the Ceremony, the White Dress

What happens, in order

1
Electra talks to "Philebus" without knowing he is her brother. She tells him she is the lowest servant in the palace and washes the king's and queen's underwear. Her proof: her rough, chapped hands.
2
Without knowing it, she pushes him toward murder: "What would such a young man do — take it quietly, or draw his sword?"
3
Clytemnestra appears. Big surprise: she does NOT regret killing Agamemnon. "When I saw his blood… I sang and danced for joy." She only regrets losing her son. She warns Electra: one day you will carry a crime you can never wash off.
4
THE DEAD MEN'S DAY. Once a year, soldiers roll away a big black stone from a cave. The people believe the dead come out and live with them for one night. Aegistheus invented this ceremony to keep the people afraid — fear is how he rules.
5
Aegistheus calls his people "Dogs!" and pretends to see the ghosts, naming people and their sins one by one.
6
ELECTRA'S REBELLION. She was ordered to wear black. She comes in a WHITE dress and dances on the temple steps. She shows the people: "Look — the dead do nothing. The sky does not fall." The crowd starts to believe her.
7
ZEUS SAVES THE TYRANT. He raises his right arm and says a magic word — "Poseidon, carabou, carabou, roola" — and the great stone crashes down. The people are terrified again. Religion rescues the dictator.
1
⚠ The white dressWHITE = REBELLION, not innocence. (Innocence is the wrong answer they plant.) Everyone else wears black.

⚠ Who feels guilty?Clytemnestra: yes, but NOT for the murder. • Aegistheus: NO guilt at all, and he envies her for having some. • The people: guilt manufactured by the state. • Orestes: never.

Lecture 9 — The murders and the ending

What happens, in order

1
Orestes tells Electra the truth: "I am Orestes." She is disappointed! She wanted a violent, angry brother. "I have no use for noble souls; what I need is an accomplice."
2
He first offers to take her away — he did not come to kill anybody. But then he decides he wants to belong: "I must take a burden on my shoulders."
3
Aegistheus alone: "I am tired. For fifteen years I have been upholding the remorse of a whole city." He admits he invented everything, and he believes his own lie now.
4
ZEUS TELLS HIS TWO SECRETS:
(a) "The first crime was mine; I committed it when I made man mortal."
(b) "Once freedom lights its beacon in a man's heart, the gods are powerless against him."
The secret of gods and kings: men are free, and must never find out.
5
THE MURDERS. Aegistheus does not defend himself — he asks to die. Orestes says: "Justice is a matter between men, and I need no God to teach me it." Then he kills Clytemnestra alone, offstage. She dies cursing them.
6
THE TWO SIBLINGS SPLIT. Orestes: "It is not night; a new day is dawning. We are free." Electra: everything is dark, she cannot see, and she says he did it, not her.
7
The Furies (= the flies) come. Only Electra can see them, because only she accepts the guilt. Orestes sees nothing.
8
Zeus offers a deal: a little repentance, and you can both be king and queen of Argos. Electra accepts and becomes Zeus' slave. Orestes refuses: "Neither slave nor master. I am my freedom."
9
THE ENDING. Orestes tells the people he takes all their guilt: "Fear your Dead no longer; they are my Dead." He refuses the throne and walks out of the city, and the flies follow him. Like the flute-player who led the rats out of Scyros.
1
★ The rule that explains the whole play Zeus says: a crime the doer DENIES makes the gods strong. A crime the doer OWNS makes them powerless.

Aegistheus denied his crime for 15 years → the gods were safe.
Orestes owns his crime → he is free and the gods can do nothing.
Electra denies hers ("you did it, not me") → and the Furies take her.

⚠ The two siblings CROSS OVER ELECTRA: starts free (white dress, dancing) → ends a slave begging Zeus.
ORESTES: starts empty ("free as air") → ends truly free.
If a question asks "who is the existentialist?", the answer depends on when.

The political code of The Flies

Sartre wrote in 1943, when the Nazis occupied France. He could not attack them openly, so he hid his message in a Greek story. The censors saw only an old myth.

Final Exam Tips

The 6 traps she uses

1. "All of the following are TRUE / FALSE except"
Circle the word true or false BEFORE reading the options. The wrong statement is usually a family relationship or a modern word on the old play (absurdism, existentialism, prose — these can never describe The Oresteia).

2. The deleted answer
Sometimes the right answer is removed and the key is "none". Example: "Who was Agamemnon's concubine?" — Cassandra is not in the list. Choose "none", not the least-wrong name.

3. The god swap
Each god has ONE job. Apollo commands the murder. Athena judges and votes. Hermes guides. Check the job, not the name.

4. The play swap
A true fact about the wrong play. Remember: Sartre demotes everything.

5. The deleted word
"Athena honours men in all things, including marriage" — the real line says "but marriage". One missing word makes it false.

6. Numbers
7 plays, 90 written, 456 BC, 1943, 3 blows, 10 jurors, 15 years, age 18.

The 10 sentences that answer the most marks

1
7 of Aeschylus' ~90 plays survived. He added the second actor. A turtle killed him.
2
Apollo commands the matricide. Athena casts the deciding vote on a tied jury of 10. The Furies become the Eumenides.
3
The curse began with Atreus' cannibal banquet. Aegisthus is Agamemnon's COUSIN, and Clytemnestra's lover.
4
Aeschylus: Clytemnestra kills, 3 blows, in the bath. Sartre: Aegistheus kills, with an axe.
5
Old Orestes kills for revenge, on Apollo's order. New Orestes kills for freedom, pushed by Electra, ordered by no one.
6
The flies = the Furies = remorse. Only Electra can see them.
7
"Once freedom lights its beacon…" is said by ZEUS, not Orestes.
8
Electra starts free and ends a slave. Orestes starts empty and ends free.
9
Aegistheus = Hitler. Clytemnestra = Vichy. Argives = the French. Orestes = the Resistance. Zeus = the Church. Paris, June 1943.
10
Oresteia: verse, chorus, polytheism, fate, feminist, reconciliation. Flies: prose, no chorus, atheism, freedom, misogynistic, departure. Shared: animal imagery.
١
